Bowls of colourful natural pigments alongside vividly coloured foods
01 — Colours

Natural & Synthetic Colours

A natural colour is derived from plant, animal, mineral or microbiological sources through processing that does not modify the chemical nature of the colour. A colour identical to one occurring in nature can also be produced by chemical synthesis, referred to as nature-identical.

The use of natural food colours has been gaining popularity as consumer awareness of healthy foods increases. Synthetic (artificial) food colours are manufactured chemically and remain the most commonly used dyes in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
